Michelangelo’s “Journey through Tombland”

This amazing graphic by Dave Hoerlein traces Michelangelo’s 40-year odyssey to complete his hoped-for magnum opus: the Tomb of Pope Julius II.

Michelangelo began the project in 1505 with grand ambitions for a 50-foot pyramid topped with David-sized statues. But over the years, his long-and-winding road ran into numerous obstacles: from wars, to lawyers, to unexpectedly falling in love. Will our intrepid artist reach his goal???

This is just one of 180 colorful illustrations from Michelangelo at Midlife—a book that Kirkus Reviews called “gorgeous,” and BookLife gave an “A grade” for Sandra Hundacker’s elegant design.

Dave and Sandra helped turn a mere book into a visual opera.
